ODRT makes video to highlight role of injured worker advocates
Published on 05-09-2008     Print Version

The ODRT released a new video entitled Last line of defense to compliment its basic training on Workplace Insurance.  It encourages workers to become advocates for the cause of injured workers.

Every year, workers gather to support grieving family and friends and to rededicate themselves to fight for the living. Their cry is for safe and healthy workplaces and justice and dignity for injured workers and their families. In Ontario, an average of three hundred workers are killed each year and thousands more fall victim to occupational diseases. The system that was established to protect them, fails to live up to its promise. Its shortcomings often worsen the situation for afflicted workers and adds insult to injury.  In too many workplaces, productivity, apathy and costs trump safety. When injury occurs, a culture of shame ensues that discourage workers from filing compensation claims or supporting injured workers.  Research shows that the failure to claim rate exceeds forty percent of eligible claims and the rate of claims abandonment persist at twenty percent. Claims for occupational disease are less than one percent of the total annual estimates in Ontario.  In persuing compensaton, many workers experience the pressures and frustrations arising from loss of ability, depleted savings, financial insecurity, mental stress and alienation.  All this takes a toll and causes many workers to become dispirited, depressed and suicidal.  The ODRT's video "Last Line of Defense" was produced to encourage workers to persue training and become advocates for the cause of injured workers.
