Impact of Economic Downturn on Injured Workers

The economic crisis in Ontario has resulted in many workplaces significantly downsizing and many more plants closing. Injured workers are left in the aftermath without much consideration of their vulnerability.  An expert panel will discuss the impact on injured workers with significant impairments, and what the challenges are for them to become re-employed.  The panel will also look at the impact on the WSIB and their funding situation and policy strategies in relation to the thousands of injured workers who will be forced to look for assistance.

Confronting Work Disruptions

The Ontario manufacturing sector is facing a dramatic and devastating downturn. In the last few years thousands upon thousands of workers have suffered plant closures and  lay-offs.  This workshop thoroughly explains WSIB policies regarding work disruptions as well the criteria for further benefits and services. Participants will be advised on how to meet the criteria in the policies and prepare workers for impending lay-offs or plant closures.
An expert panel will also examine the application of the WSIB’s new work disruptions policies,  to help participants identify problems arising from these situations and discuss successful strategies.

Impact of Bill 187

Deeming is one of the most significant barriers to-day in the struggle for injured workers to get justice.  In 2007 the government announced they were solving this problem by eliminating deeming by introducing Bill 187. This expert panel will discuss in detail the provisions of the Bill as well as the resulting WSIB policies that appear to still use deeming practices and even incorporate new deeming provisions.  The panel will discuss how understanding these policies and developing successful strategies are crucial in assisting injured workers in a work disruptions situation.

Exploring LMR

An expert panel will discuss the pitfalls of the current LMR system. They will also explore successful strategies utilizing LMR to achieve re-employment of injured workers. This will be followed by a workshop that explains the LMR process and what can be expected through the various stages. Participants will gain valuable knowledge that will assist them in making the right choices and the ability to support their demands
